Rangers part ways with long-time Frisco RoughRiders pitching coach Jeff Andrews

Andrews spent 19 seasons in the Rangers’ organization over two different stints.

ANAHEIM – The Rangers have parted ways with long-time minor league pitching instructor Jeff Andrews, who spent the last two seasons overseeing the prospect-laden rotation at Double-A Frisco.

Andrews, 63, had spent 19 seasons in the Rangers organization over two different coaching stints. He twice served as the pitching coach at Frisco, from 2009-15 and again the last two years. Frisco produced the Texas League’s lowest ERA (3.98) and fewest walks (423) in 2021. This past season, though No. 1 draft pick Jack Leiter was inconsistent, the Roughriders won the Texas League championship for the first time in 18 years.

Frisco’s staff ranked third in the league in ERA (4.70), second in WHIP (1.40) and third in batting average allowed (.247). At different points this season, the Roughriders pitching staff this season included Leiter, Cole Ragans, who advanced to the majors, Owen White, Zak Kent, Mason Englert, Cody Bradford and Avery Weems, who was eventually moved to the bullpen.

Though they have struggled to produce homegrown talent over the last eight years, the Rangers are not overhauling pitching development. There is traditionally some level of turnover year to year. Andrews and rookie level pitching coach Jesus Delgado will not return, but minor league pitching coordinators Danny Clark and Jordan Tiegs are expected back.

The Rangers confirmed the changes, but did not comment directly on the dismissals.

“On the whole, we performed well in a lot of the categories we deem important,” said assistant general manager Ross Fenstermaker, who oversees player development. “That said, we recognize the opportunities that exist for improvement on both the micro and macro scale and we will continue attacking those as a collective unit.”
