Ex-Rangers manager Chris Woodward returns to Dodgers in new role, reports say

The Rangers fired Woodward in the midst of his fourth losing season with the organization back in August.

Former Rangers manager Chris Woodward is heading back to Los Angeles, according to multiple reports Friday.

The 46-year-old previously served as third base coach for the Dodgers from 2016-2018, but reportedly will return to the organization as a special assistant to the front office and is expected to take on a roving instructor role working with infielders.

Woodward was hired ahead of the 2019 season and took over a 95-loss team. In his tenure, he saw 2020 scuttled by the pandemic, oversaw a full-scale rebuild in 2021 and had to sit through the idleness of a long owner-imposed lockout this season.

He went 211-287 with the Rangers and was in the midst of his fourth losing season when he was fired by the organization back in August. The Rangers were languishing toward another 90-loss season when the team fired Woodward two games shy of his 500th with the club and with a season remaining on his contract.

Woodward retired as a player following the 2012 season after parts of 11 years in the majors and immediately joined Seattle’s player development staff as an infield coordinator. Two years later, he joined Seattle’s coaching staff. When Dave Roberts took over the Dodgers for the 2016 season, he joined the Los Angeles staff.
