Angels’ Shohei Ohtani skipping next start, won’t pitch vs. Rangers

Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters on Sunday that Ohtani said he was feeling “arm fatigue.”

The Texas Rangers won’t have to worry about facing Shohei Ohtani this week when the Los Angeles Angels come to Arlington, at least on the mound.

Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters on Sunday that Ohtani said he was feeling “arm fatigue” and asked to skip his scheduled start, which would have come Wednesday against Texas.

Nevin also said that Ohtani is not injured and will return to the rotation during a series at home against the Reds that begins Aug. 21.

“I’ve told you guys many times he knows his body better than anybody,” Nevin said. “I trust him when he talks about it. He’s assured me there’s no pain, there’s no injury. He’s got some regular arm fatigue that some go through at times. I trust him when he tells me this and he’ll be ready for his next time out.”

Nevin said Ohtani told him Saturday that he needed to take a start off. The right-hander will not take any time off as the team’s designated hitter.

“He feels good at the plate,” Nevin said. “He feels healthy swinging at bat. It’s just the (throwing) right now, he’s got some normal arm fatigue that happens at times.”

The two-way superstar leads Los Angeles in batting average (.305), home runs (40), runs batted in (83), earned run average (3.17), wins (10), and strikeouts on the mound (165), among other stat categories. Texas will now be able to shift its focus to calming the bat of the MVP candidate.

The Rangers (70-47) lead the AL West over Houston by 2.5 games, while the Angels (58-60) have fallen 12.5 games off the pace in the division after deciding to hold onto Ohtani at the trade deadline.

The Texas-Los Angeles series is set to start Monday night at Globe Life Field.
