Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung has wrist surgery, to miss at least six weeks

Jung suffered a fractured wrist in the Rangers’ game against the Rays on Monday.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung was scheduled to undergo wrist surgery on Tuesday and will miss at least six weeks, GM Chris Young acknowledged.

Jung traveled to Phoenix to see hand surgeon Dr. Don Sheridan, the same surgeon who performed his left thumb surgery last August. Jung was expected to have a metal plate and screws attached to the bone to help in the healing process.

“It was a tough break for him,” Young said. “He was very dejected last night understandably and In pain, too. So, I hate it for him. He came into camp in great shape and obviously had a calf injury and got back for opening day. He was off to a tremendous start. This is a bad break for him. Hopefully, he’s due for a string of really good luck for a while. Nonetheless, we’re going to miss him.”

The Rangers called up infielder Justin Foscue, their first-round choice in 2020, to replace Jung. Foscue is expected to platoon at first base with left-handed hitting Jared Walsh. The Rangers started left-handed hitting Josh Smith at third against Tampa Bay right-hander Zach Eflin on Tuesday, but infielder Ezequiel Duran is likely to get the majority of time at third. The Rangers also will make sure to get Corey Seager some days off, due to his recovery from sports hernia surgery, which could necessitate both Smith and Duran playing at the same time.

The injury was the latest issue to sidetrack Jung. He missed most of camp with a calf strain. Last season, a 109-mph liner off the bat of Miami’s Jorge Soler fractured his left thumb. He missed most of 2022 recovering from labrum surgery. And he missed two months in 2021 while recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot.
