Texas Rangers receive ‘good news’ on Nathan Eovaldi, who only has a ‘mild’ groin strain

The Rangers placed Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list on Friday.

OAKLAND — The Texas Rangers might’ve caught a break on the injury front for once.

Starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi received “good news” on his groin injury following a checkup with a specialist in New York, manager Bruce Bochy said before Monday’s game against the Oakland Athletics. Eovaldi does not have a sports hernia injury, which was a concern, and Bochy said that the 34-year-old could be pitching again around the time that he’s eligible to be reinstated from the injured list (May 18.).

“It’s a very mild groin strain,” Bochy said.

Bochy said he’s unsure as of Monday whether Eovaldi would need to make a minor league rehab start. Eovaldi last pitched Thursday vs. the Washington Nationals and was pulled in the sixth inning after he appeared to hop down the mound in pain after delivering a pitch. The Rangers placed him on the 15-day injured list Friday.

“We’ll see exactly how long [his timeline] it’ll be,” Bochy said. “Maybe [he’ll need a rehab start], maybe not.”

Eovaldi has a 2.61 ERA in 41-1/3 innings pitched this season through seven starts.
