Texas Rangers recall RHP Cole Winn, designate Jesus Tinoco for assignment

The Rangers shuffled the messy part of their bullpen again Sunday, recalling right-hander Cole Winn and designating Jesús Tinoco for assignment.

Tinoco, who allowed a pair of runs in an inning on Saturday, allowed runs in five of nine games since having his contract purchased from Triple-A Round Rock. He posted a 1.800 WHIP and had only one outing in which he did not allow a baserunner.

By DFA’ing him, it created a spot on the 40-man roster and the Rangers need flexibility there. With Max Scherzer and Josh Jung soon expected to be activated from the 60-day IL, the Rangers need to clear space on the 40-man roster. Players on the 60-day IL do not count against the roster, but must be added once they are activated.

Winn, who spent a month with the Rangers earlier this season, had a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings at Triple-A Round Rock since the demotion. The former first-round pick got off to a good start with the Rangers, allowing no runs in his first seven innings, then allowing 11 in the next 7.1.

Winn ended up pitching the eighth inning Sunday, allowing a pair of runs on a hit, a walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
