Will any Rangers players be there?

The Rangers — one year after they sent six players to the All-Star game in Seattle and nine months after they mashed their way to a first-ever championship — will be without an elected starter for July 16′s midsummer classic at Globe Life Field.

Their last hope evaporated when Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros was voted to start at second base over Rangers ironman Marcus Semien.

The Rangers have a couple of worthy candidates to be reserves. Infielder Josh Smith has made a strong case during his breakout season. Closer Kirby Yates also will receive consideration as well, as his 0.92 ERA in 29 and 1/3 innings ranks second-best among AL relief pitchers.

Tuesday, July 16

A who’s who of Rangers

While there likely won’t be more than one or two Rangers in the All-Star Game itself, the week is sure to be loaded with Texas Rangers current and former.

Firstly, as per tradition, Bruce Bochy will be managing the AL team in the ASG as the winner of last season’s American League Championship Series.

Rangers Hall of Famers Michael Young and Adrian Beltre were named managers of the Futures Game, and they in turn loaded their staffs full of their former Ranger buddies. Expect appearances from Elvis Andrus, Ian Kinsler, Prince Fielder, Nelson Cruz, Mitch Moreland, Colby Lewis and more.

Young, Beltre and fellow Rangers Hall of Famer Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez were also named All-Star ambassadors, the franchise tagging them as the official faces of All-Star Week. They took turns wearing the “Face of the Franchise” tag for big chunks of the Rangers’ team history, so it seems a natural fit.
