Will GM Chris Young sign extension with Texas Rangers? Uncertainty is growing

The architect of the 2023 Rangers World Series team is in need of a new contract, as his current deal expires at the end of the year.

Texas Rangers GM Chris Young helped assemble the 2023 World Series championship team, yet he is without a contract for the 2025 season.

In the latest edition of Evan Help Us, where Rangers insider Evan Grant answers fans’ questions, a fan asked what the chances are for Young signing an extension.

The answer: With each day that goes by without a deal, uncertainty is growing.

Should he have gotten a new deal the moment he became the team’s sole decision-maker in August of 2022? Probably. Should he have gotten a new deal when the Rangers won the World Series? Absolutely.

But Rangers owner Ray Davis conducts his business deliberately, which likely will end up costing him more money in the long run. Over the last two years, the cost of a strong GM has grown to about $5 million per year.

Ultimately, Grant says, Davis should find the right number for a deal and he believes Young wants to stay with the team. But the longer Davis waits, the shakier things become.

“I put the chances of Young remaining at greater than 50%, but it slips a little bit more each day as more clubs get closer to making decisions about their own GMs and word spreads of potential openings,” Grant wrote.

Not reaching a deal with Young would be a shocking development in the baseball industry. How could a homegrown GM that played for the team, chose to leave the commissioner’s office for the team and already brought the franchise its first championship not get an extension?

“If you lose that guy, what exactly is it that you are seeking in the position? It would create a lot of troubling questions about the franchise’s vision for the future and put Davis in a spot where he does not like to be: front and center as the voice, albeit temporary, of the organization,” Grant wrote.
