Josh Jung’s Day Off: Schedule quirk lets Rangers 3B see little brother in big leagues

The Rangers got to Chicago Sunday, giving Josh the opportunity to watch younger brother Jace play Monday less than two weeks after his first big league callup.

CHICAGO — Josh Jung will probably never have another off day like it.

A schedule quirk had the Rangers arriving in Chicago on Sunday night and staying at the same hotel where there was already another J. Jung registered: His younger brother, Jace, and his Detroit Tigers teammates. It allowed Josh, who is nearly three years older than Jace, the opportunity to watch his younger brother play on Monday less than two weeks after his first big league callup. The Jungs’ father, Jeff, had noticed the schedules lined up last week, allowing for the brothers to better plan to maximize the reunion.

“It will probably never happen again,” Josh Jung said Tuesday afternoon. “It was just pretty unreal to be there and to be proud of him.”

The brothers had breakfast on Monday. Josh had given his little brother a bit of playful advice during his first week in the big leagues: Watch out for the costs of those room service breakfasts. So, they went to a nearby restaurant and were joined by Rangers teammates Wyatt Langford, Travis Jankowski and Andrew Heaney. It was still much cheaper than room service. Even better: Heaney picked up the check.

Then Josh went to the park alone to watch the Tigers face Chicago. Jace had a pair of hits in five at-bats, including the go-ahead single in the seventh inning of a 6-3 win. And it wasn’t the only reunion of the day for Josh. White Sox starting pitcher Davis Martin was his teammate at Texas Tech for two years.
