Texas Rangers bench coach Donnie Ecker no longer a candidate for White Sox manager job

Ecker and associate manager Will Venable were given permission to interview for Chicago’s managerial opening last week.

The Dallas Morning News reported last week that two Texas Rangers coaches, Will Venable and Donnie Ecker, were given permission to interview for the Chicago White Sox’s open manager job.

Venable has served as the team’s associate manager while Ecker has been Texas’ bench coach and offensive coordinator.

Two people with direct knowledge told The News that Ecker is no longer involved in Chicago’s managerial hunt, and he will remain with the Rangers.

However, there is no update on Venable, who appears to be the team’s manager-in-waiting under Bruce Bochy. Last year, Venable passed on interviews with the New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians during the Rangers’ run to the World Series.

While Bochy’s contract is up after 2025, it remains unclear if he will manage the team past next season.
