Source: AAC planning to keep 8-game conference schedule, plus nonconference games

Four of the five Power 5 conferences have gone to a league-only schedule for football.

The American Athletic Conference, along with the league’s commissioners, are planning to keep the eight-game conference schedule for the 2020 football season, a source with knowledge of the league’s thinking confirmed to The Dallas Morning News on Friday.

The league will still be able to keep its four nonconference games under this plan. The situation, of course, remains fluid. The scheduling of other leagues, as well as the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, could alter things.

Sports Illustrated first reported this development.

For SMU, this is welcome news. The Mustangs are one of the few FBS programs to not have had their schedules altered by the pandemic. As long as the Big 12 doesn’t alter its schedule, SMU could keep all 12 games.
