SMU-TCU matchup returns as Mustangs release non-conference hoops schedule

SMU will face the Horned Frogs for the first time since 2018.

One of the big questions facing new SMU men’s basketball coach Rob Lanier when he first took the job was how he’d build out his non-conference schedule. Last year, it ended up being a thorn on the side of the Mustangs’ NCAA Tournament resume.

“You can win less games and have a higher profile depending on how you schedule,” Lanier said when he was hired.

The point: scheduling can be a catalyst for a NCAA Tournament hopeful. Now we have an idea of the degree for the SMU men’s basketball team heading into this season.

The Mustangs released their non-conference schedule on Thursday. The highlight, at least initially, is a renewed rivalry game with TCU at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth on Dec. 10. The Mustangs will also head to Dayton, Texas A&M, and play in Honolulu, Hawaii for a tournament.

TCU is the only team on SMU’s non-conference schedule that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Two teams on SMU’s conference schedule, Memphis and Houston, made the tournament a year ago.

SMU will play every American Athletic Conference team twice except Temple (home) and UCF (away).

Of course, things can change. A win over a team early in a non-conference schedule can grow in value over time, just as a loss can worsen. At least now there’s a sense of what teams SMU will have to keep an eye on throughout the season.
