Watch: SMU’s Rhett Lashlee channels ex-Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson in postgame celebration

Lashlee’s Mustangs pulled off a 34-27 road win over No. 22 Louisville to move to 5-1 and 2-0 in ACC play.

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee had plenty of reason to celebrate on Saturday.

Lashlee’s Mustangs pulled off a 34-27 road win over No. 22 Louisville to move to 5-1 and 2-0 in ACC play in their first season in the conference.

After the game, Lashlee paid homage to former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson.

“Once upon a time, in the city of Dallas, there was a really famous coach,” Lashlee said while addressing his team. “Who said something that kind of sounded like ‘how ‘bout those Mustangs!’”

The coach Lashlee was referring to was Johnson. On Jan. 17, 1993, a euphoric Johnson exclaimed “How ‘Bout Them Cowboys!?” after his team defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

The win was SMU’s first over a ranked opponent this season. Quarterback Kevin Jennings was the star of the game, amassing nearly 400 all-purpose yards.

After a bye week, SMU will return to ACC play against fellow conference newcomer Stanford on Saturday, Oct. 19.
