AP college football poll (Oct. 6): SMU makes first appearance of 2024; Texas back at No. 1

The Mustangs finally cracked the top-25 after taking down Louisville on the road Saturday.

SMU, welcome to the AP top-25.

After an upset of No. 22 Louisville on the road Saturday, the Mustangs entered the AP’s rankings for the first time this season at No. 25.

The Mustangs have received votes multiple weeks this year but were finally able to crack the top-25 after three consecutive wins over power-conference opponents — TCU, Florida State and Louisville — and a 2-0 start in the ACC.

The 34-27 win against Louisville at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium Saturday put the Mustangs at 5-1 on the year and kept their hopes of reaching the ACC championship game — and even the College Football Playoff — alive.

This week’s ranking is SMU’s first in the AP top 25 since it was ranked No. 22 in the nation at the end of last season.
