Stars recall prospect Mavrik Bourque ahead of Game 3 of Vegas series

Bourque made his NHL debut with Dallas on April 6.

The Dallas Stars’ young core just got stronger after the team’s latest recall Friday.

General Manager Jim Nill announced that the Stars have recalled forward Mavrik Bourque from the Texas Stars ahead of Game 3 of their first-round matchup with the Vegas Golden Knights.

It has not been announced whether Bourque will play Saturday at T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, but the Stars are dealing with injuries to forwards Mason Marchment and Radek Faksa. Head coach Pete DeBoer said Friday he does not yet know their status for Saturday but ruled them day-to-day.

Bourque then returned to the AHL where he was the winner of the Les Cunningham Award as the league’s most valuable player. He was also the AHL’s scoring champion with 77 points (26 goals and 51 assists). He is the first scoring champion to also win MVP since Chicago’s Kenny Agostino claimed both in 2016-17.

The Plessisville, Quebec native helped lead the Texas Stars to a first-round victory over Manitoba. Texas will face Milwaukee in a best-of-5 series starting Thursday. Depending on how long he stays with Dallas and how long the Stars’ season lasts, Texas may be without their best player in the next round.

Bourque joins teammates Logan Stankoven (F), who was called up to Dallas in late February, Derrick Pouliot (D) and Matt Murray (G). Pouliot and Murray have not yet played in the playoffs but both appeared in the regular season.
