Full coverage from Stars-Oilers Game 2: Dallas cranks the gas in 3rd period to tie series

The Stars have officially recovered from their third-straight Game 1 loss as they tie up Western Conference final vs. Edmonton.

The Dallas Stars are in familiar territory.

For the third time in a row, Dallas was down 1-0 in the series to start Game 2 at home. Just like it did in the last round against the Colorado Avalanche though, the Stars pulled it together and will hit the road with the series tied 1-1.

The Edmonton Oilers bring a unique challenge in Round 3, but Dallas managed to hold the best player in the world, Connor McDavid, and his teammate Leon Draisaitl, the leading scorer of the playoffs, off the scoresheet in Game 2. Not looking for a repeat of Game 1, in which McDavid played the hero for the Oilers in overtime, the Stars broke out of a first-period shooting slump and got ahead with a Mason Marchment redirect in the third period before padding their lead on the open net.

Dallas 3, Edmonton 1

Third period (2:03 remaining): Esa Lindell catches Stuart Skinner skating to the bench and shoots the puck into the net from center ice, giving Dallas insurance in the final minutes.

Third period (6:33 remaining): As the Oilers try in the waning minutes of the game to tie up the score, Edmonton has begun rolling out Connor McDavid, the playoffs’ two leading scorers, together. Still, Dallas is holding the Oilers at arms distance, only allowing one shot on goal in the final frame so far.

Dallas 2, Edmonton 1

Third period (16:19 remaining): Mason Marchment gets his stick on a shot from Ryan Suter at the blue line, and Stuart Skinner can’t corral it, putting Dallas up 2-1 despite shooting woes.

End of second period: Dallas 1, Edmonton 1

The Stars have put more pressure on Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner, but the Oilers have withstood it. With 20 minutes remaining in the game, Dallas will look to build on the adjustments it made in the second period in hopes of getting a win at home before hitting the road for Canada.

Though the score is tied, the Stars have a distinct momentum disadvantage heading into the second period. Edmonton is outshooting Dallas 16-5 thanks in part to stifling play in the neutral zone and a 59% faceoff win percentage.

Though the Stars’ offense has looked its usual high-octane self when it can get into the offensive zone, the challenge for them through the final 40 minutes will be getting there in the first place with improved zone entries and exits.
