Stars defenseman Matt Dumba week-to-week with lower body injury

Dumba suffered the injury after he was tripped up by the Islanders’ Casey Cizikas.

The Dallas Stars will be without a top-pairing defenseman for Tuesday’s game against the San Jose Sharks and the foreseeable future.

Stars coach Pete DeBoer announced Tuesday that Matt Dumba (lower-body injury) is week-to-week but will not require surgery.

The right-handed defenseman suffered a lower-body injury during his second shift Saturday and missed the remainder of the game.

Dumba was tripped up by Islander Casey Cizikas, and his right leg folded awkwardly beneath him when he landed. The defenseman immediately skated to the bench in pain.

He managed to return and play another six shifts for 6:02 total of ice time in the first period, but he did not return to the bench to start the second.

The Stars added Dumba in free agency this summer, signing the 30-year-old defenseman to a two-year deal worth $3.75 million annually.

He was a longtime rival of the Stars’ during his 10 seasons playing with the Minnesota Wild, but began to win over the fan base during training camp when his addition to Dallas’ top defensive pairing allowed Miro Heiskanen to play on his strong side.

His physical play was also an addition the Stars needed.

He played 18:28 during the Stars’ season opener against Nashville Thursday and was plus-two.

Brendan Smith entered the lineup in Dumba’s place, and Dallas managed to post a second consecutive shutout in another strong defensive performance. Dallas also recalled Alexander Petrovic on Tuesday for some extra defensive depth.
