Stars recall defenseman Alexander Petrovic from Texas following injury to Matt Dumba

Petrovic earned a spot in Dallas’ lineup during the playoff run last spring.

The Dallas Stars have called up some extra defensive depth for their game Tuesday evening against the San Jose Sharks.

The team announced Tuesday morning that it had recalled defenseman Alexander Petrovic from the Texas Stars.

The announcement comes just three days after defenseman Matt Dumba left Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders with a lower-body injury. Dumba missed Sunday’s game against Seattle, and Stars head coach Pete DeBoer ruled him week-to-week Monday.

Petrovic, a 32-year-old defenseman from Edmonton, appeared in one regular season game for Dallas last year before being called up again in the playoffs and earning a spot in the lineup for the end of the series against Colorado and the entire Western Conference finals series against Edmonton.

Petrovic averaged 12:02 of ice time in seven playoff games but did not record a point.

He is in his fifth season with the Texas Stars where he serves as an alternate captain.

Dallas chose to recall Petrovic over top defensive prospect Lian Bichsel, likely because of Petrovic’s performance in the postseason as well as the organization’s preference to keep young talent playing each night, even if it’s in Cedar Park.

Petrovic will probably be a healthy scratch, as Brendan Smith entered the lineup Sunday to replace Dumba.
