TCU’s Gary Patterson on facing OU: ‘Lincoln [Riley] is one of the more creative people in the business’

The head coach also spoke about how the Frogs utilized their bye week.

With a bye week now in the past, the Horned Frogs are looking to rebound from their loss to Kansas State on Oct. 10. Prior to the bye, the Frogs had played in three straight weeks, including a loss to Iowa State and a win over Texas.

With the Horned Frogs heading into a matchup against Oklahoma at 1-2, here are three takeaways from head coach Gary Patterson’s appearance during this week’s Big 12 teleconference:

No weeks off

Patterson said teams don’t have off weeks during football season. He also said the Frogs used this past week to recover from injuries that came from playing three weeks straight. The past three games have been physical to say the least and some position players such as quarterback Max Duggan are starting to take big hits.

The team is not where he wants them to be, according to Patterson, however, one position he’s impressed with is his young running backs. He also said the team could use some more skill at the wide receiver position, as well as the offensive line. He noted that Wes Harris (offensive lineman) has stepped in and done a great job in an area that the team needed improvement.

The Frogs have used their bye week to rest and address the areas that needed improvement from the last three games.

Lincoln Riley’s creativity

Patterson: “Lincoln [Riley] is one of the more creative people in the business.”

This is something that, according to the head coach, gives opponents problems.

Oklahoma has beaten TCU the last six times the two teams have played. If Gary Patterson has UT’s number, it is fair to say Lincoln Riley has TCU’s.

With both of TCU’s losses this season having been by one score, Patterson said the Frogs are a couple plays away from being 3-0, and need to get over the hump in order to win those types of games.

New transfer rule

Patterson also spoke about not being in support of the new transfer rule that is being drawn up.

“There are always situations where it is better for a kid to transfer,” Patterson said. “But at the end of the day, I worry some kids will never grow up.”

A lot of players might want to transfer during or after their freshman year because of a lack of playing time, but Patterson says it’s hard for teams to win games if the roster is constantly changing. He also talked about the importance of staying at one university in order to earn a degree.
