TCU roster rankings, Nos. 5-1: Offense, offense and more offense

The TCU offense is on schedule to make impressions on Big 12 defenses in the 2021 season.

As the summer approaches, it is time for us to point out some of the Frogs’ top talent. On Monday, we looked at players Nos. 15-11 and on Tuesday we looked at Nos. 10-6. Today we will examine the five best players on the TCU roster.

5. Quentin Johnston / So. / WR

During his freshman season, Johnston led the team with 22.1 yards per catch which was also the best in Big 12 history by a true freshman (minimum 20 receptions). Johnston had the third-most points scored on the roster in 2020 behind quarterback Max Duggan and kicker Griffin Kell. If Johnston continues the path he is on, he is sure to be a key player in the 2021 season.

4. Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson / Jr. / CB

Not only is Hodges-Tomlinson great because of his family tree, but his athletic ability shines through on the field as well. Hodges-Tomlinson led the team with 13 pass breakups and was named to multiple All-American teams. After allowing just 12 catches on 45 targets he was rated by Pro Football Focus as the nation’s highest-graded cornerback in coverage.

3. Zach Evans / So. / RB

Evans is the highest-rated recruit in TCU football history and is beginning to make a name for himself. After sitting out during parts of preseason practice due to exposures, Evans struggled to learn the playbook. He has since improved and at the end of the season was beginning to play like the star fans thought he would be, rushing for over 100 yards in two of the last three games. Evans finished the season with an average of 7.7 yards per carry (team-best).

2. Derius Davis / Sr. / WR

Davis became a star on special teams with his 14.5 yards per return average – best in the Big 12. He was also one of just three returners in the country with two punt return touchdowns. Davis stepped up for his team when they needed him most and should continue to do so in the 2021 season.

1. Max Duggan / Jr. / QB

Max Duggan is the star of the TCU football team. When he is having a good game, his success translates to everyone else on the field. His ability to run the ball when the pocket begins to close (team-best 526 rushing yards) and be a smart player makes him the best on the team. He led the team with 10 touchdowns. He is a leader on and off the field and his teammates point to him as their playmaker.
