TCU adds former Boise State coach Andy Avalos as defensive coordinator

Avalos will be tasked with helping the Horned Frogs to a defensive turnaround.

That didn’t take long. TCU fired its defensive coordinator on Sunday and already had a new one 24 hours later.

Andy Avalos, a former Boise State head coach, is headed to Fort Worth after the Horned Frogs announced the move Monday afternoon. Avalos was fired from his Boise State job in November despite a 22-14 record into his third season. The Broncos went on to win a Mountain West Championship. Avalos was also defensive coordinator with Oregon from 2019-2020, when the Ducks won consecutive Pac-12 titles. He was a 2019 semifinalist for the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant. TCU brought him on for that same defensive prowess.

Avalos replaces Joe Gillespie, who was fired Sunday after two seasons in Fort Worth and a national championship appearance against Georgia. TCU’s defense allowed 27.8 points and 408.3 yards per game this season and gave up a season-high 69 points to Oklahoma in a season-finale loss.
