Shortly after Texas A&M’s College World Series finals loss to Tennessee on Monday night, Jim Schlossnagle called out a reporter for asking about his future.
Earlier in the day, Texas announced that it had parted ways with baseball coach David Pierce after eight seasons. It didn’t take long for Schlossnagle’s name to be mentioned among candidates to watch for the vacant position.
The Aggie coach wasn’t pleased when a reporter brought up a “specific job opening” after A&M fell short of a national title.
“I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you,” Schlossnagle said. “I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again, and that hasn’t changed in my mind.”
Schlossnagle, who took over the head coaching gig at A&M in 2022, added that it felt unfair to talk about the scenario at this point. He likened it to someone asking Aggie star Braden Montgomery if he was heading to the MLB draft after the tough loss.
“I understand you gotta ask the question, but I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job,” Schlossnagle said. “And I’ve given this job every single ounce I can possibly give it. Write that.”

Before landing in College Station, Schlossnagle found success at TCU. He became the program’s all-time winningest coach, leading the Horned Frogs to five College World Series berths.
According to Kirk Bohls of the Austin-American Statesman, the university made the decision with the intention of replacing Pierce with a “high-profile coach” as the Longhorns prepare to join the SEC next season.
Pierce had two years left on a contract that paid him $1.2 million annually.
