Takeaways from Texas’ 72-67 win over Creighton: Longhorns hold on to stay undefeated

The Longhorns only committed three turnovers in their second ranked win at the Moody Center.

Here are three takeaways from Texas’ 72-67 win over Creighton:

Christian Bishop’s reunion

Texas forward Christian Bishop faced his former team, Creighton, on Thursday night. Bishop was a critical player in Creighton’s 2021 Elite Eight run. The St. Louis native notched six points, four assists and one rebound against the Bluejays.

“It’s nice to see him in a place he likes,” Creighton junior Ryan Kalkbrenner said about Bishop. Kalkbrenner was a freshman at Creighton in Bishop’s final year in Omaha.

Crunch time

The Longhorns survived their first close game this season. The last three minutes of the Creighton matchup were close, with the Bluejays just trailing by five points. Senior guard Baylor Scheierman was averaging 44.2% from the three-point line prior to tonight’s game. The South Dakota State transfer was 3-13 from the three point line, but all of his made three-pointers came in the final minutes of the game.

Texas’ response to Scheierman’s late three-pointer barrage demonstrated visible growth from last year’s team. Marcus Carr made five points with under two minutes to play, extending his team’s lead in a critical moment.

The Longhorns head to Madison Square Garden on Tuesday to face No. 16 Illinois with former Big 12 stars Matthew Mayer and Terrence Shannon Jr. Texas also has Stanford and No. 13 Tennessee on its non-conference schedule, as well as the Big 12 gauntlet.

The way Texas responds in close moments will be critical as the season continues.

Taking care of business

On a night where shots weren’t falling, Texas held on with only three turnovers to Creighton’s seven. The Longhorns also nabbed 11 points off of turnovers while Creighton had five.

“We’ve had a few of these games over the years, but not against a quality opponent like Creighton,” Texas head coach Chris Beard said.

Beard knows that his team will need to have better nights offensively going forward, but for now, a win is a win.
