Texas’ Anthony Hill Jr., Oklahoma’s Danny Stutsman named to Butkus Award watch list

TCU’s Namdi Obiazor was listed as well, the award given to college football’s top linebacker.

They grow up so fast.

Just two seasons ago linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. was the No. 1-rated recruit in the entire Dallas area while starring at Denton Ryan. Now an anchor on defense for the Texas Longhorns, he’s on a shortlist of the best college linebackers in the country.

On Tuesday the National College Football Awards Association released the Butkus Award watchlist, the award presented at the end of the season to college football’s best linebacker.

In his freshman season, Hill totaled 67 tackles and five sacks, forcing a fumble and breaking up two passes as well. He made four tackles in Texas’ CFB Playoff loss to the Washington Huskies.

Stutsman is the Sooners’ physical freak on defense, a 6-4, 241-pound senior who’s totaled over 200 tackles in the last two seasons. He had three sacks, forced two fumbles and picked off a pass last season.

TCU’s Obiazor is also entering his senior year with the Horned Frogs. He made 84 tackles and had three sacks last season, earning him an honorable mention for the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award.
