Texas QB Quinn Ewers participating in practice, reportedly expected to play vs. Oklahoma

Ewers hasn’t played since suffering an abdominal injury three weeks ago in a blowout win against UTSA.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers appears on track to play against Oklahoma next Saturday.

The Longhorns starter, who suffered a non-contact abdominal strain three weeks ago in a win over UT-San Antonio, participated in practice on Tuesday and received first-team reps, according to Orangebloods’ Anwar Richardson.

In his report, Richardson said he was told, “Quinn is playing [against Oklahoma]. No way he misses this game or the rest of the season. He wants to win the SEC and a Natty.”

The Longhorns do not have a game this weekend ahead of the Oct. 12 matchup against its top rival, giving Ewers even more time to recover from his injury.

In his second career start last week, backup quarterback Arch Manning led Texas to a 35-13 win over Mississippi State in place of Ewers. Manning passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score, and Texas got another standout performance from its defense to earn the program’s first Southeastern Conference victory.

Manning threw five touchdowns in relief of the injured Ewers in Texas’ 56-7 rout of UTSA, and started last week’s 51-3 win over Louisiana-Monroe.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1 SEC) is also off to a good start in 2024.

The Sooners rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Auburn, 27-21, on Saturday, also earning its first SEC win. OU bounced back from a loss at home to Tennessee the previous week in their SEC opener.

True freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. gained 230 yards of total offense in his first career start for Oklahoma after replacing Jackson Arnold during the Tennessee game.

Oklahoma, like the Longhorns, will be idle this week as it prepares for the Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
