Texas Tech starting safety Marquis Waters suffers season-ending pectoral injury

The Red Raiders’ secondary suffers a big loss.

During his weekly media availability on Tuesday, Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced that Marquis Waters suffered a season-ending pectoral injury.

The safety had played four seasons in the Duke secondary prior to transferring to Texas Tech. Waters totaled 234 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, 18 pass breakups, and three interceptions in his time with the Blue Devils. Waters was one of the most highly anticipated newcomers on the Red Raiders’ defense with his skill-set and previous experience playing for Texas Tech co-defensive coordinator Derek Jones.

In the four games he played this season, Waters tallied nine total tackles, 1.0 tackles for loss, and an interception he returned for a touchdown. Having played only four games, Waters could use a medical redshirt and play another season for the Red Raiders in 2022 if he wishes. The Texas Tech secondary, which already has five interceptions this year, will now have to look to other veterans to step up and make plays.
