Shedeur Sanders autographs tortilla on field after Colorado downs Texas Tech in Lubbock

The average shelf life of a flour tortilla is 5-7 days.

Things got a little weird in Lubbock in Saturday’s game between Joey McGuire’s Texas Tech and Deion Sanders’ Colorado.

Weird during the game, and weird afterward, too.

Some controversial calls peppered throughout the second half by the officiating crew made for a tense fourth quarter, and at one point during a replay review fore a targeting call, Red Raider fans began throwing all sorts of debris on the field. That included bottles, various litter and, in true Texas Tech fashion, tortillas.

At one point McGuire hopped on the stadium PA to plead with the crowd to stop throwing things on the field.

Red Raider fans throwing tortillas on the field is a longstanding Texas Tech tradition dating back to the 1980s. If you ask how it started, you’ll get varying answers, even from the most knowledgeable of Tech fans.

But, naturally, there were plenty of tortillas left on the turf after the game, and before he and the victorious Colorado Buffaloes left the field, quarterback and son of Deion, Shedeur Sanders, was pictured autographing one of the tortillas for fans.

Sanders, a candidate to be the first-overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, had a strong night as he led the Buffs to the victory, passing for just under 300 yards, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another. The win keeps Colorado in line for an appearance in the Big 12 championship, while it ended the hopes of appearing in the title game for Texas Tech.
