Five more locations of The Biscuit Bar are expected to open by early 2020.
The D-FW-based co-owners of the shop have signed leases in Deep Ellum, Arlington, Coppell, Fort Worth and Abilene. They currently operate two Biscuit Bars, in Plano and University Park, which opened in spring 2018 and spring 2019, respectively.
What’s more, husband and wife Janie and Jake Burkett had their third child in September. Restaurants and infants combined, the Burketts have six new babies.
Their country-chic restaurants center around family recipes for biscuits and gravy. Janie says Jake made as many as 10,000 biscuits in their home kitchen during the months when their first-born was an infant. Janie has a background in commercial real estate and Jake is involved in raising the capital for the company.
All seven of the current and coming-soon Biscuit Bars will be owned by the Burketts; they don't have plans to turn it into a franchise, they say. Their biggest seller is The Hoss, a piece of fried chicken on a biscuit with bacon, cheese, honey butter and sausage gravy.
It isn't a healthy place — though they do have a few salads. This is a restaurant that prides itself on an indulgent brunch, a southern-fried dinner or late-night food — maybe after you've had one too many drinks. Some of its locations near college campuses might see an especially strong late-night and brunch crowd.
"What inspired us was, really, just to have simple food," Janie says.
When building the business, she says she tried to think about how to create a restaurant that diners would want to re-visit often. It's an important hurdle in Dallas' bustling and fickle restaurant scene, where diners can try a new restaurant every week if they choose. Janie hopes that their southern-comfort recipes are accessible and low-priced enough for the neighborhoods they'll move into.
"From a business perspective, people come back to food they're familiar with," she says.
Jake notes that a family can likely eat at the Biscuit Bar for $35.
Beyond biscuits, The Biscuit Bar operates a full bar, with cereal cocktails like a Cinnamon Toast Punch; Bloody Marys; frozen mimosas called Fromosas; and beer.

- Deep Ellum on Nov. 21, 2019, at 2550 Pacific Ave., Dallas, inside The Epic development
- Arlington in November 2019, at 1707 N. Collins St., at a development near AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Park called Champions Park
- Fort Worth in December 2019, at 122 E. Exchange Ave., in the new Mule Alley project in the Stockyards
- Coppell in December 2019, at 104 S. Denton Tap Road, near Sandy Lake Road
- Abilene in early 2020, near Abilene Christian University
