‘Drunk yoga’ planned at new Virgin Hotel in Dallas

Each 90-minute boozy fitness class incorporates wineglasses (and wine) into yoga movements.

Drunk Yoga is coming to Dallas.

It’s the first time that the New York City fitness and entertainment class has scheduled an open-to-the-public event in Dallas. The classes will be Jan. 3-6 at Virgin Hotels Dallas, the funky new development in the Dallas Design District.

Given the hotel’s edge — like how it calls its guest rooms “chambers” and has a dedicated lounge called the Shag Room — Drunk Yoga seems on brand.

The class is part workout, part party, and is suitable for beginners. The 90-minute class starts with a 15-minute happy hour before a 45-minute vinyasa yoga class and a 30-minute “wine down.”

Students’ cups of wine will be incorporated into the movements and poses during class — which means they can sip while they slip into drunkward dog ... er, downward dog.

Drunk Yoga founder and CEO Eli Walker will lead the classes on the fourth-floor pool club. The pool isn’t open until springtime, so the class doubles as a sneak-peek inside an area that hotel guests may not otherwise see.

The four classes take place at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 3; noon and 7 p.m. Jan. 4; and 1 p.m. Jan. 5. A $45 ticket price includes two glasses of wine. It’s BYO-mat.

According to a press release, Drunk Yoga is always hosted at unconventional places like bars or — get this — on yachts. “This approach allows those who are otherwise too intimidated to try yoga to build a community and discover the beneficial practice of yoga while having fun,” says the release. The idea is to get classmates “drunk on joy, not on alcohol,” it says: So drink responsibly.

There’s a two-glass limit, and the teacher cautions against pre-partying before class.

While non-traditional yoga classes have become popular in Dallas-Fort Worth, boozy yoga classes have been a little more scattered. A few examples of recent events include Yoga and Spritzers at The Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas; rooftop yoga and mimosas at HG Sply Co.; and beer and yoga pairings at a handful of breweries.

But there’s certainly a market for offbeat yoga classes. We’ve seen dozens of sold-out events in North Texas like goat yoga, puppy yoga and kitty yoga.

The Virgin Hotels Dallas is at 1445 Turtle Creek Blvd., Dallas. Drunk Yoga ticket info here.
