Dinner has never been more expensive in Dallas-Fort Worth. What about a meal that costs $5 or $10? That’s breakfast, and new restaurants are popping up all over North Texas serving tacos and toasts, bagels and beignets.
Here are 16 new breakfast and brunch restaurants that opened in Dallas-Fort Worth in late 2023 and early 2024.
Restaurants listed in alphabetical order.
Abby’s Bagels in East Dallas
Stop into Abby’s Bagels on Lowest Greenville for “strong espresso” and “hot bagels,” as the neon signs outside read. Both are great. Lines are already out the door at this new, dressed-down breakfast and lunch spot. It never takes long.
Abby’s Bagels is at 1915 Greenville Ave., Dallas.
Bill Smith’s Cafe in Van Alstyne
Truckers and farmers have already found the new Bill Smith’s Cafe, which relocated from McKinney to a D-FW town farther north, Van Alstyne. The cafe opens at 5 a.m. — early for many of us, but not for some of owner Bill Smith’s regulars. Smith is often in the kitchen, flipping pancakes and frying eggs. Regulars said they were thrilled to see the prices stay reasonable, with a big plate of eggs, pancakes and bacon costing less than $10, and a basket of biscuits and gravy at $4.25.
Bill Smith’s Cafe is at 233 E. Jefferson St., Van Alstyne.
Breakfast Club 51 in McKinney and Fort Worth
What started as a breakfast cafe in the small North Texas town of Roanoke — then called Roanoke Cafe — got a name change and bigger footprint. Breakfast Club 51 expanded to Fort Worth in November 2023 and McKinney in February 2024. Menu items include omelets, chicken-fried steak, eggs with corned beef hash, French toast, crepes and smoothies.
Breakfast Club’s newest restaurants are at 6650 N. Beach St., Fort Worth; and 7560 Highway 121, McKinney. Roanoke restaurant remains, at 1212 N. U.S. Highway 377.
Bricks and Horses in Fort Worth
Brunch at Bricks and Horses, the restaurant inside the upscale Bowie House hotel, is becoming a fashionable weekend stop for Fort Worth residents and tourists. There’s a fancy cowgirl theme here, and executive chef Antonio Votta’s brunch menu includes buttermilk fried quail and waffles; steak and eggs; and biscuits with blackberry jam and Texas-raised Iberico jamón. Those would all pair well with a brunch cocktail.
Bricks and Horses is the hotel restaurant inside Bowie House, at 3700 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth. Restaurant reservations are recommended; find availability on Resy.
Cafe Frida in downtown Garland
Tucked inside Scoop N’ Buns in downtown Garland is a new Frida Kahlo-themed coffee shop, Cafe Frida. It’s been called a “speakeasy coffee shop” on Instagram, hidden through a set of doors covered in greenery. While coffees seem like the thing to get, the shop also sells all-day bites like churros and conchas. We’re interested in the horchata latte mentioned by CultureMap.
Cafe Frida is at 509 W. Walnut St. (inside Scoop N’ Buns), Garland. Get the latest on Instagram.
Egg Posh in Frisco
As the name suggests, Egg Posh serves breakfast in a pretty dining room. Menu items include healthful options like a veggie scramble with egg whites, zucchini and mushrooms, and indulgent breakfasts like short rib tacos, a birria burrito and a rib-eye steak with chimichurri. The plentiful menu includes lots of lunch options, too — helpful, because we all have that friend who doesn’t eat breakfast.
Egg Posh is at 4851 Legacy Drive, Frisco.
Fluffy Fluffy in Frisco and coming soon to Carrollton
The thing to get at Fluffy Fluffy is its Japanese-style souffle pancakes. They are — you could say — fluffy, and much thicker than a traditional pancake. They come topped with sweet options like matcha tiramisu, Nutella and bananas, or whipped cream and Oreos. The company is young, founded in 2018 in Canada, but it’s quickly growing as a franchise and has about 30 restaurants open across the world today. The Frisco restaurant is the first in Texas. Another, in Carrollton, is expected to open in May 2024.
Fluffy Fluffy is at 9244 Prestmont Place, Frisco. Closed Mondays. The second location, not yet open, will be at 2700 Old Denton Road, Carrollton.
Huckleberry’s Breakfast & Lunch in Keller
Breakfast and lunch franchise Huckleberry’s has one D-FW restaurant open now, in Keller, and a second coming soon in Sachse. The restaurant is from California, but the menu takes inspiration from New Orleans. You see it in the Breakfast Benedict with Andouille sausage, and with the Mardi Gras beignets and French Quarter French toast. Huckleberry’s serves a Cajun-inspired lunch, too: shrimp po’ boys, fried catfish and the like.
Huckleberry’s Breakfast & Lunch is at 711 Keller Parkway, Keller. The Sachse restaurant is expected to open at 3105 Bunker Hill Road at an unknown date.
Kolache Shoppe in Celina
Texas-Czech bakery Kolache Shoppe, which dates back to 1970, has made its first franchise leap into Dallas-Fort Worth with a shop in Celina. Pillowy pastries come stuffed with ham and Swiss; sausage, egg and cheese; or sweeter fillings like apricot, blueberry or Nutella. Kolache Shoppe is a grab-and-go place that also sells espresso drinks.
Kolache Shoppe is at 605 S. Preston Road, Celina.
La La Land in Plano
The smiley coffee shop with yellow cups is expanding to Plano with its ninth Texas location. La La Land at the northwest corner of Preston Road and W. Park Boulevard opens Feb. 24, 2024. Since the first shop opened on Dallas’ Greenville Avenue, La La Land has been a place to get lattes, matcha teas and breakfast bites like avocado toast.
La La Land is at 2301 Preston Road, Plano.
Parlor Doughnuts in Flower Mound
Parlor goes big on variety, and doughnuts include turtle cheesecake, raspberry pistachio, maple bacon and more. Interestingly, the shop also sells keto doughnuts, which are made with almond flour and have 3 grams of net carbs. Like many on this list, Parlor is a franchise and is growing across the country. The company has six shops in Texas, including three others in D-FW: Lake Worth, McKinney and Southlake.
Parlor Doughnuts is at 1450 Long Prairie Road, Flower Mound.
The Spelled Milk in Oak Cliff
What’s a cereal bar? It’s a shop that has way more flavors of cereal than most of us could ever fit in our pantries — more than 100. For about $6 or $7 per bowl at The Spelled Milk, customers can pick a cereal and a choice of milk. For $2 more, staffers will add a scoop of ice cream on top. The “cereal combos” let the pros do the picking: Lucky Toast is Lucky Charms + Cinnamon Toast Crunch + whipped cream + cereal marshmallows. Milkshakes follow similar patterns. I’d take a chance on the Hot Hive: vanilla ice cream + Flamin’ Hot Cheetos + Honey Nut Cheerios + whipped cream + honey drizzle. Celebrities like it, our Simaran Sira reports.
The Spelled Milk is located at 712 W. Davis St., Dallas. Closed Mondays.
Sugar Llamas in Rockwall
As we mentioned in our list of D-FW’s best dessert shops, Sugar Llamas’ mini doughnuts are teeny little delights. The math probably doesn’t work out, but I think you can eat four little doughnuts for the calorie count of one normal-sized one. (Don’t check me on that.) Sugar Llamas’ owners in Rockwall say businesspeople stop in before meetings, kids come by after school and police officers take their breaks there for a sweet treat. There’s another Sugar Llamas store in Keller.
Sugar Llamas has two locations in D-FW: 6601 Horizon Road, Rockwall, and at 242 Rufe Snow Drive, Keller.
Taqueria Los Angeles in Plano
Starting Feb. 23 Taqueria Los Angeles will move to a new location, on 14th Street in Plano, leaving its home on Jupiter Road. The restaurant is popular for its tacos and burritos, reports our Imelda García, but during breakfast times, options include chilaquiles, breakfast burritos, migas and more.
Taqueria Los Angeles is expected to open at 2600 14th St., in Plano on Feb. 23, 2024. Stay up to date on Instagram.
Toastique in Far North Dallas
East Coast juice cafe and “gourmet toast” shop Toastique opened in Far North Dallas in early February 2024. Toastique’s core menu is open-faced sandwiches of the breakfast and lunch variety. There’s avocado toast, of course. Gourmet options include peanut butter with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, jam, granola and more; and a three-cheese Italian with roasted garlic onion jam. The restaurant was started in 2018 in Washington, D.C., and is now a franchise. The Far North Dallas location is Texas’ first.
Toastique is at 5467 Belt Line Road, Dallas.
Trades Deli in Oak Cliff
Stop in for breakfast or stay for lunch, Trades Deli is a bagel and sandwich shop in Oak Cliff where you might want to linger. Maybe it’s the jazzy cafe vibe. Or just all that great gluten? Oak Cliff’s newest bagel shop offers yet another cozy spot to hang out in Dallas’ Bishop Arts District.
Trades Delicatessen is at 312 W. Seventh St., Dallas.
