Dallas Mavericks fans: Eat like Luka Doncic at this North Texas restaurant

Lewisville restaurant Motor City Pizza is making food inspired by Doncic’s favorite Slovenian dish.

In an effort to cheer on the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Playoffs and Finals, Lewisville restaurant Motor City is selling the Luka Pizza, a pie topped with potato moussaka based on player Luka Doncic’s mother’s recipe.

You might be asking yourself: Do you want potatoes on your pizza?

Here’s a better question. Do you want the Mavericks to win? Better give this Luka Pizza a shot.

Motor City Pizza owner Greg Tierney doesn’t know Luka personally. Tierney read on that one of Doncic’s favorite dishes is potato moussaka, a casserole made with ground beef and layered slices of potatoes, mixed together and baked with a creamy sauce.

Doncic is from Slovenia. “When I first left home,” Doncic told SI, “my mom would come and visit I would always ask her to make it. I’d eat it the whole time she was visiting.”

He went on to say that all of the women in his family, even his great-grandmother, make potato moussaka back home.

“Even today, I ask for it whenever I’m feeling homesick,” Doncic said.

Restaurateur Tierney knows a good opportunity when he sees one. He put Cracker Jacks on a pizza to help cheer on the Texas Rangers — and boost sales — as they approached the World Series in 2023. He also made Dallas Cowboys themed pizzas like The Dak, a pie with crawfish, blackened chicken and Cajun cream sauce, in honor of Louisiana-born quarterback Dak Prescott.

Motor City Pizza was listed as one of the best regional pizza joints in the United States by The Washington Post in 2023. It has also been named one of Yelp’s favorite pizza joints.

For the Mavs’ runup to the championship, Tierney took inspiration from the recipe and layered potatoes on top of his Detroit-style pizza crust. (Tierney is from Michigan, but not to worry, he roots for Texas teams now.)

Potatoes on The Luka are topped with ground beef and a cream sauce made with eggs, cream, milk and cheese. The Luka is finished with garlic cream and basil.

The small pizza costs $15.95 and a large is $23.95, available at Motor City Pizza in Lewisville. Given the thick, Detroit-style crust, even one slice is a hearty helping.

Tierney can’t help but add: “Go Mavs!”

Motor City Pizza is at 1425 FM 407, Lewisville.
