Dallas’ now-closed Carte Blanche to reopen as La Rue Doughnuts elsewhere

The shop in Trinity Groves will sell crullers, a favorite at Carte Blanche.

Dallas pastry chef Amy La Rue is leaving East Dallas and moving to West Dallas.

The pastry shop that operated in the mornings inside of the now-closed Carte Blanche will be reinvented as La Rue Doughnuts in Trinity Groves. The shop will move in where Cake Bar vacated a few months ago, on the back side of the complex. The development in West Dallas is undergoing a reinvention, and plans call for a hotel, 5,000 residential units and millions of square feet of office space.

La Rue Doughnuts is expected to open in August 2024, a spokeswoman said.

According to a story in CultureMap, La Rue’s new business will focus on doughnuts, one of Carte Blanche’s most popular sellers at breakfast time. La Rue declined an interview with The Dallas Morning News. She co-owned Carte Blanche with her chef-husband Casey La Rue, who operated a fine-dining tasting menu at the Greenville Avenue address at night.

On Greenville Avenue, Carte Blanche co-owners Amy and Casey La Rue worked two shifts at the restaurant: Casey made fine-dining food in the evenings, and Amy made pastries in the mornings (adding items like breads and desserts to the dinner menu). Amy La Rue’s crullers — a deep-fried pastry in the shape of a doughnut, but with a ridged surface — were some of the best in North Texas. The chocolate and the lemon-poppyseed were personal favorites. The shop also made pistachio crullers, vanilla bean crullers and more.

It isn’t clear what else La Rue will be cooking up in Trinity Groves. At Carte Blanche, she also made muffins, focaccia, cheddar-jalapeño pretzels, croissants, cookies and more.

The La Rues signed the Trinity Groves lease before the closure of Carte Blanche on June 7, 2024.

They explained on Instagram that the East Dallas location wasn’t a good location for a fancy dinner. “The timing felt right, so we decided to move on,” it said.

The team at Trinity Groves was glad to have a new breakfast option in their development.

“The leadership at Trinity Groves was impressed with Casey and Amy’s culinary pastries, awards and reputation,” said Sam Romano, partner in Trinity Groves. “We feel this concept and its creators’ entrepreneurial spirit coincide perfectly with Trinity Groves.”

La Rue Doughnuts is expected to open at 3011 Gulden Lane, Dallas, in late summer 2024.
